SAN FRANCISCO - Fewer high school students are getting acceptance letters from the University of California this year.
UC reported Tuesday that the admission rate for freshman applicants for fall 2009 was about 72 percent, down from 75.4 percent for fall 2008.
The lower admission rate comes after UC received a record number of applications and reduced freshman enrollment by 6 percent in response to state budget cuts.
The nine UC campuses offered admission to 66,265 freshman applicants for fall 2009, a roughly 2 percent decrease from the previous year.
Admission offers rose 4 percent for Latino students and 2 percent for black students. Offers declined 6 percent for white students and remained relatively unchanged for Asian students.
